Biography

I grew up in a household where art and textile crafts were taken for granted. I taught myself much about crochet and embroidery from a New Idea craft book around 1970. I like my hands to be busy and my mind gainfully occupied, so my house is full of books and supplies for art and crafts.

I have five children. Making for them enabled the development of my skills in needlework.- but my creative life really blossomed after the fifth one started school around twenty years ago.

The gift of an SLR camera (and a set of macro lenses)many years ago gave me the opportunity to develop as a photographer. When having films processed was still a thing,  Kristina loved mine because they were never of people…

I am an inveterate collector, given to rescuing unloved objects. Some of my collections end up in artwork, or as the subjects of painting or photography.

I make useful and unique homewares and bags, using upcycled and redeployed fabric where possible. My vintage buttons embellish Treasure Purses pieced from interesting fabrics and trims. Tea-towels become cushion covers. Old picture book pages are upcycled as little gift envelopes, ideal containers for gifts of cards or cash. I make brooches using scraps of textile, embroidered and often beaded, as well as beaded earrings and charm bracelets and neck-pieces made of found objects and some pretty things.

Last year I worked with Moyston Primary School to produce “Resurgence”, a yarnbombed sculpture celebrating the resilience of the community after the Moyston grass fire of 2015, and I have created a Story Time Mat for Ararat Regional Art Gallery’s Mini makers Art Club.

My newest venture is designing garments and homewares via VIDA, using my photography and other artworks. The pieces are digitally printed and made up by expert artisans , before being shipped to the buyer. The makers are given the opportunity to learn literacy and numerancy skills as part of their payment, which adds to the appeal for me.
