Description of Venue

In late January 2016 the Horsham Regional Art Gallery returned home to the Horsham Town Hall. After a once in a generation transformation of these historic spaces for the display of art, we once again display our collection, present the best in touring exhibitions and an engaged workshop program with exhibition outcomes.

The collection has three main components, the first being artists and artworks that reflect and tell the story of the Wimmera. Our rich history and place has been recorded by Sidney Nolan, Marion Borgelt, Polixeni Papapetrou and Martin King. We have a strong commitment to reflect our community and telling the story of our region to our residents and visitors alike.

The main focus of our collection is Australian photography. Beginning with the acquisition of Max Dupain’s Meat Queue, and Carol Jerrams Vale Street both in 1976; HRAG has attempted to reflect current themes in photographic practice and its historic development within Australia. This tradition continues today with recent acquisitions by Trent Parke, Tracey Moffatt, and Darren Sylvester. Highlights from this part of the collection are presented in the historic Council Chamber within our suite of first floor permanent collection galleries.

Horsham Regional Art Gallery owes its existence to the generosity of Australian Pianist Max Jost AM, whose proposed gift of his collection in 1981 prompted the reuse of the historic Horsham Municipal Offices as an art gallery in 1983. Jost’s bequest forms our holdings of Australian painting and works on paper. We continue to honour Mack’s legacy through building on his collection with contemporary Australian paintings by Darren Jolley, Jon Campbell and Julie Fragar.

We present six touring exhibitions throughout the year as we attempt to bring the best in Australian art practice to Horsham. Alongside this we program six specialist photographic exhibitions that allow us to work with some of Australia’s best practitioners and place our collection in context. We look forward to sharing these exhibitions and our Collection when you visit.
